Mary Griffin’s “Not A 10” Podcast

David Vick — October 5, 2022

Virginia Tech defender Mary Griffin returned to the lacrosse field in 2021 after undergoing surgery to remove pancreatic cancer.

As one can imagine, lacrosse publications and news outlets were captivated by Mary’s story of overcoming hardship; she decided to share her life-changing experience with the journalists who came calling.

Being interviewed repeatedly provided Mary with an opportunity to reflect on her cancer journey, which allowed her to gain a greater understanding of the wide range of emotions she was experiencing.

“It was kind of therapeutic to get interviewed and explore answers to questions that I was never asked while getting diagnosed,” Mary said.

During this time, the Sykesville, Md. native was inspired to turn her mess into her message, an idea brought to light by GMA co-anchor Robin Roberts.

“The more I shared my story, the more people opened up about their personal hardships. And I just loved hearing about those and asking them questions,” Mary said.

After the 2021 season ended, Mary was driving in her car and reflecting on the year that was. Personally, it was taxing. On the field, the Hokies finished a disappointing 5-11.

“I was like, ‘gosh, this year, if I could describe it in any way, it would just be not a 10,’” she said.

Mary, a sports media and analytics student, decided to start the “Not A 10” podcast with this theme in mind, knowing the impact it could have on people.

Since “Not A 10” began in June 2021, Mary has spoken with guests of different backgrounds and passions, ranging from pilot and Miss United States Sam Anderson to lacrosse superstar Charlotte North.

“The number one thing that I learn from all my guests is the vulnerability and authenticity that each guest carries,” she said.

Mary’s passion for storytelling has led to 19 podcast episodes. While unable to consistently record “Not A 10” because of her strenuous schedule as a student-athlete, she is proud of the work done so far.

Her hard work has impacted the lives of friends, teammates and individuals she has never met. It has also made a difference in her own life.

“The people I’ve talked to have changed the perspective of how I look at life,” she said.

As Mary enters her fourth season as a Hokie, she is unsure of what is to come for “Not A 10.” However, she has no intention of leaving it behind because of what it means to her and others.

“Anyone can relate to the ‘Not A 10’ podcast because no one on this Earth is perfect.”
