The Artist

Lacrosse, just like any other sport, is an art form. It allows for the artists who take part to put their own style on the game and play it their way.
Hannah Smith is a representation of this. The former Gardner-Webb midfielder is an artist on the field and off, literally.
Many players find lacrosse as an escape from everyday struggles of life. For Smith, the same is true for art. Her interest and passion for art began when she was young as an escape from her ADD, attention deficit disorder.
“My passion may have started because I couldn’t listen to my teacher, but now it’s turned into something that I have confidence I can use to build a career,” said Smith.

Not only has art been an escape for Hannah, but it’s also been a way for her to support others.
“She goes out of her way from [sic] others on so many occasions, and often her art and/or cooking is involved,” said Lauren Deaver, friend and roommate of Hannah’s.
Smith is a cartoonist who also enjoys semi realistic paintings and drawings.
“I specialize in pen and ink, but recently I have found a love for acrylics and pastels as well,” said Smith.

She announced last week on Instagram she is transferring to Savannah College of Art and Design to pursue a master’s degree in illustration.
“My dream is to go into animation and SCAD was the only school that made sense to spend my last two years of education at,” said Smith.
While she is preparing herself for a successful career, Smith is not hanging up the cleats yet. She will use two redshirt years available to play on SCAD’s Women’s Lacrosse team at the NAIA level.
Hannah has more days in front of her as an artist than she does as a lacrosse player. However, both will always hold a special place in her heart.
“The community and lifelong friendships I made on the lacrosse team at Gardner-Webb are more valuable to me than anything, if it wasn’t for my team and coaches, I wouldn’t have been able to finish my senior year show.”
